Paul Gill’s Dad’s Last Ride turns a working-class funeral into the wildest, most laugh-out-loud British farce of the year
United Kingdom, 3rd Sep 2026 – About the Book: When Sidney “Tex” Crockett drops dead mid-toilet break while studying the racing pages, his family are left with one final problem: how to grant his lifelong dream of a ton-up ride in a Jaguar.
What starts as a simple plan quickly spirals into pure pandemonium. A clapped-out Jag that hasn’t moved in years, a rain-soaked midnight mission, a body that flies through the windscreen, and a very suspicious police chief later, the Crocketts find themselves with an empty coffin and a greenhouse full of tomatoes.
From dodgy pub nicknames and council meeting absurdity to a barn full of unlikely swingers and one very creative body swap, Dad’s Last Ride is a gloriously British black comedy packed with sharp banter, warm-hearted family loyalty, and enough belly laughs to make your sides ache.
Key Highlights:
- A heartfelt yet hilarious tribute to working-class life in and around Birmingham
- Colourful cast of unforgettable characters including Knackernut, Tree Trunk, The Legs and Windy
- Non-stop absurd situations that escalate from factory tea break to motorway mayhem and beyond
- Perfect for fans of British humour in the tradition of The Full Monty, Brassed Off and The Royle Family
- Warm, witty dialogue drawn from a lifetime of factory-floor banter
About the Author:
Paul Gill started work at 15 on the factory floor and spent his working life in the workshops of the West Midlands. He never lost his love of storytelling or his sharp eye for the funny side of everyday life. After 60 years of scribbling bits and pieces (much to the long-suffering patience of his wife Janet), Paul has finally published his debut novel. Dad’s Last Ride is packed with the same irreverent humour and colourful nicknames he gave his mates and family over the decades.
